Watch Out: Free Online File Converters May Be a Trap

March 21, 2025•1 min read

The FBI Denver Field Office is warning internet users about a growing cyber scam involving free online file converter tools. These seemingly helpful websites—used to convert or combine file types like DOC to PDF or JPG to PDF—are being exploited by criminals to install malware on your device.

While the converter may do the job as promised, it can silently embed malicious software or scrape your files for personal information. This includes sensitive data like:

  • Social Security numbers

  • Banking or cryptocurrency info

  • Passwords and email addresses

Many victims don’t even realize they’ve been compromised until it's too late—resulting in identity theft, financial fraud, or ransomware attacks.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Think Before You Click: Pause and assess the legitimacy of any tool before using it.

  • Keep Antivirus Updated: Scan every downloaded file with up-to-date security software.

  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you’ve been targeted, submit a report at IC3.gov.

If You’ve Been Affected:

  • Contact your bank immediately.

  • Change all passwords using a secure device.

  • Run a full virus scan or get professional help.

Staying cautious online is your best defense.
